SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Former San Diego Chargers linebacker Junior Seau drove his car off a coastal cliff in California hours after he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, police said on Monday.

An emergency crew found the 12-time Pro Bowler on the beach below the cliff and he was transported to a hospital where he was treated for minor injuries, according to Carlsbad police Lt. Paul Mendes.

Seau, who spent the bulk of his 20-season NFL career with the Chargers, was the lone occupant of the car.

Police said there was no evidence that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The crash followed Seau's arrest late on Sunday evening on charges he assaulted his 25-year-old girlfriend.

Seau was not at the home when officers arrived but called his girlfriend a short time later and agreed to come back to the residence, police said.

He returned and was arrested shortly after midnight without incident. He posted bail and was released, according to jail officials.

Seau played for the Chargers from 1990 to 2002, the Miami Dolphins from 2003 to 2005 and the New England Patriots from 2006 to 2009.
