* KJRH - Tuesday Mayor Dewey Bartlett, along with a small panel of city staffers and community leaders, conducted two interviews. TPD Deputy Chiefs Mark McCrory and Daryl Webster are the only internal candidates to be interviewed for the job. If Mayor Bartlett does not offer the job to McCrory or Webster, a nationwide search will begin. Interim Police Chief Chuck Jordan says he will apply. The mayor is expected to take at least a week to consider the internal candidates, before deciding whether to expand the search.
* KOTV - Tulsa Public Schools takes a stand against a controversial new law. The school board voted Monday night to give six special needs students scholarships to a private school, but that's it. TPS has more than 6,000 special needs students. The new law would require the district to pay for those to attend private schools. The Tulsa school board voted to honor the scholarships for six students who had already applied but the district will not consider any more applications. Jenks, Broken Arrow, Union, Bixby, and Owasso have already decided not to comply with the law. Tulsa Representative Democrat Jabar Shumate co-authored the law. he said. He says the districts are out of line by refusing to follow it, he even suggests the schools may need a lesson in civics. Shumate said.
* KOTV - Despite its decision on House Bill 3393, TPS says it's heard the complaints of parents loud and clear. The district says it's taking this opportunity to further develop its special education department. TPS stands by its special education programs, saying they are excellent. But administrators admit there's always room for improvement.
* KOTV - The Tulsa City Council defended its lawyer Tuesday in a heated exchange with Mayor Dewey Bartlett, who believes the council is violating the City Charter by utilizing a full time city attorney. At different points, Mayor Bartlett asked a city councilor to stop pointing his finger at him, and for another to stop interrogating him. Bartlett is alone in the city government in arguing the position is illegitimate. Some councilors believe it's a personal vendetta, because Rees advised the council during their investigation of Bartlett. Said Tulsa City Councilor Henderson.
* A Pentagon spokeswoman says recruiters have been told that they must accept gay applicants, following a federal court decision striking down the ban on gays serving openly in the military. Spokeswoman Cynthia Smith said Tuesday that top-level guidance has been issued to recruiting commands informing them that the military's rule has been suspended for now. Recruiters also have been told to inform potential recruits that the moratorium could be reversed at any point.
* At least three service members discharged for being gay have begun the process to re-enlist after the Pentagon directed the military to accept openly gay recruits for the first time in the nation's history.
* ODOT - The right lane of northbound US-75 will be closed at 71st St. South from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday for surface repairs. The northbound US-75 off-ramp to 71st St. South is also closed during this time.
* The PBS television series Ask This Old House will be taping in Tulsa today and Thursday, October 20 + 21. In case you're not familiar, Ask This Old House (sister show of the long-running This Old House) is designed to teach homeowners how to solve home repair or improvement problems that have them stumped. Wednesday, host Kevin O'Connor and plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey will be doing a DIY demo from 6-8pm at the corporate event on the opening night of Tulsa's Oktoberfest. There, they will engage audiences with an interactive, fun demonstration on how to repair drain leaks. And on the following day, Thursday, October 21, Richard will head out on a House call in Tulsa to help a local homeowner install a wood-burning fireplace insert. Both of these segments will be taped and featured on the ninth season of Ask This Old House.
* The 12 million glasses pulled by McDonald's last spring amid federal concerns about cadmium did not have unsafe levels of the toxic metal, judging by revised intake limits regulators unveiled Tuesday. Staff at the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which has been scrambling to deal with risks posed by cadmium since high levels were found in some children's jewelry, also said they won't insist on mandatory limits for an element that can damage kidneys and bones. Instead, the agency will defer to an independent, private-sector group that has been drafting voluntary limits for several months.
* SEE THE VIDEO AT KRMG.COM Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-Nev.) Washington address has emerged as an issue in his race against Republican Sharron Angle. The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) went up with its first TV ad in Nevada on Tuesday, hitting Reid for living at the Ritz-Carlton in the city's west end. Reid is shown saying. the announcer says,

* NYTIMES - NEW DELHI The Golden Temple, a sprawling and serene complex of gleaming gold and polished marble that is the spiritual center of the Sikh religion, is one of India's most popular tourist attractions. Revered by Indians of all faiths, it is a cherished emblem of India's religious diversity. So it was no surprise when the gold-plated marvel was promoted as the likely third stop on President Obama's visit to India, scheduled for early November. But the United States has ruled out a Golden Temple visit, according to an American official involved in planning. Temple officials said that American advance teams had gone to Amritsar, the holy city that is the site of the temple, to discuss a possible visit. But the plan appears to have foundered on the thorny question of how Mr. Obama would cover his head, as Sikh tradition requires, while visiting the temple. said Dalmegh Singh, secretary of the committee that runs the temple. Mr. Obama, a Christian, has struggled to fend off persistent rumors that he is a Muslim, and Sikhs in the United States have often been mistaken for Muslims.
* Univision, the Spanish language television network, is refusing to air an ad by a conservative group telling Latino voters to stay home on Election Day. The ad, paid for by a group called Latinos for Reform, debuted in several Nevada markets yesterday. Entirely in Spanish (there's also an English version), the ad says PRESIDENT OBAMA has failed to deliver on his campaign promises on immigration reform, and claims the Democrats are It ends with a narrator saying Univision said in a statement that the network believes in and they encourage Latinos to vote and that de Posada in no way represents the network. The president of Latinos for Reform, ROBERT de POSADA, has worked as a pundit for Univision, but he's also a former Republican National Committee member.
* Johnson & Johnson is recalling more Tylenol products because of a musty odor. Earlier this year, the drugmaker pulled millions of bottles of Tylenol and other products off the shelves after discovering a foul smell. The moldy odor was traced to a chemical found in the wooden pallets that ship and store the product packaging materials. According to Reuters, this most recent recall affects adult Tylenol eight-hour caplets sold in 50-count bottles. The medicine was made in March at a factory in Fort Washington, PA. The company wouldn't disclose how many bottles of the painkiller are involved in the latest recall.
* Whoopsie! Didja watch with the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars this past Monday night? Notice a few more commercials than usual? The Hollywood Reporter says the NFL is investigating whether the officials under pressure from ESPN called a coupla timeouts specifically so the network could jam more commercials in the broadcast:
* NBC has picked up another couple of series for the full season: and The network has also picked up another four episodes of the new series, as well.
* The bandleader for CONAN O'BRIEN's new TBS late night talk show will be guitarist JIMMY VIVINO. He replaces drummer MAX WEINBERG who decided not to move over to the new program after undergoing open heart surgery. Jimmy will lead The Basic Cable Band, which is basically the same guys who were in the group for and premieres on November 8th.
* END OF THE WORLD MIGHT NOT COME IN 2012 AFTER ALL: There's some good news for all those people out there who are worried about the Mayan calendar-related prediction that the world will end on December 21, 2012. LiveScience.com reports that a chapter in a new textbook called Calendars and Years II: Astronomy and Time in the Ancient and Medieval World argues that the accepted conversions of dates from the the Mayan calendar to the modern one may be off by as much as 50 or 100 years. The author doesn't know what the correct calendar conversion might be, so the supposed end-of-the-world date could actually be decades from now or it might have already passed.
* GRANDPARENTS SPEND $79,000 ON FIRST GRANDCHILD: Grandparents are shelling out huge sums to help in the upbringing of their children's offspring. Research found that they spend more than $79,000 on their first grandchild and helping his or her struggling parents. In extreme cases they spend as much as $192,000. Grandparents either forego life's little luxuries, downsize or dip into their savings to help out family. More than three-quarters say they help out financially despite having trouble paying their own bills. Many give up vacations, cars and food treats in order to help. Nearly a third helped buy the family car and contribute to the running of it, four out of ten helped pay off their children's debts or help out with bills and a third paid towards the decorating and refurbishment of their children's homes.
* RECALL - About two million Graco strollers are being recalled because of risks of strangulation and entrapment, announced the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Wednesday. The voluntary recall is being conducted in cooperation with the manufacturer, Graco Children's Products Inc. of Atlanta. CPSC and Graco received four reports of infant deaths between 2003 and 2005, as well as five reports of infants becoming entrapped in the strollers, resulting in cuts and bruises.
* Despite netting the lowest scores on Monday night's competition show after completely losing her place in her gorilla-costumed jive with partner Mark Ballas, Bristol Palin managed to hang in there on for at least another week. Instead, it was Florence Henderson, the reality competition's oldest competitor, who was given a ticket home on Tuesday night, taking partner Corky Ballas, Mark's dad, out of the ballroom with her. The elimination was disappointing news for the 76-year-old, who on Monday night earned a personal best - a 21 out of 30 for her tango with Corky to theme.
