Live Blog: 'rally To Restore Sanity And/or Fear'

October 30, 2010, 1:25 pm By DAVE ITZKOFF

In recent years, the weekend before Election Day has traditionally been a time for learning the names of candidates, figuring out the locations of nearby polling places and figuring out which foreign country to vow to move to if the other guys win. So it was a jolt when Comedy Central's political satirists Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert announced a few weeks ago that they would instead use this Saturday for a pair of competing rallies at the National Mall in Washington events that were soon combined, Voltron-disabled, into a single super-gathering called the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear.

Is the rally just a fun way to spend an afternoon with entertainers, comedians and 200,000 of your closest, most apolitical friends? A covert promotion for progressive causes on the eve of a crucial mid-term vote? Is it, as one writer has already argued, the Woodstock for the millennial generation? (Hey, man, if you didn t blog about it, you weren t really there.) Keep checking this page for live updates on the rally, video from MSNBC and dispatches from Washington by The Times's Brian Stelter and Sabrina Tavernise. Stay tuned for sanity and/or fear!
