THE PAIRINGS HAVE BEEN RELEASED FOR THE FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS
Montini isn't quite as big an underdog this season, but the Broncos will have another uphill climb if they want to repeat as Class 5A champions. Montini earned a No. 6 seed after its 7-2 regular season, which began with-to-back losses to highly-ranked Joliet Catholic and Loyola. Last season, Montini won the title as a No. 12 seed.
In the upper half of the bracket, Kaneland (9-0) earned the top seed. Vernon Hills (8-1) could be an interesting second-round opponent for Kaneland. Vernon Hills had a streak of seven consecutive shutouts this season and possesses two of the state's top players in Evan Spencer, an Ohio State recruit, and Evan Daniels, a Notre Dame recruit. No. 3 Sycamore (8-1), which only lost to Kaneland this season, and Montini are the other favorites in the top half.
In the bottom half, Joliet Catholic (8-1) received a No. 2 seed, but the Hilltoppers have to the favorite here. Their only loss this season was to Carmel, and in the opening week they defeated Montini in a rematch of last year's 5A state championship game. Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin (9-0), a No. 1 seed, might be Joliet Catholic's one obstacle to another state championship game.
